You Need A Management Retreat To Accelerate Your Business.

What’s on your mind as the year gradually draws to an end? What does 2020 hold for us in the business world? How is 2020 looking to you? What do you really want from 2020? In Nigeria, as tough as it is, there is still so much that is possible for your business. The question is, how do you want to position yourself and business to convert the possibilities around you into value?

That is what business retreats are wired to deliver. First, there is the need to have a good review of the activities of 2019. What did you do right and what was not so good? The idea is to challenge the team to come up with workable innovative ideas, to excel in 2020.

EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT - SQUARE SIZEWhen we think of retreats, people usually imagine, long, arduous hours with loads of documents and boring presentations. It used to be that very expensive venture that businesses get into towards the end of the year or at the beginning of a new year to receive instructions from the leaders – what to do and what not to do etc. At the end, we eat, play some games and listen to some powerful motivational speeches. One year later, we are asking each other what the retreat was about.

However, I have in the last few years, demystified retreats. A classical definition is, ‘’A retreat is an offsite gathering of a group of similarly engaged people – co-workers, team members, managers, board members – with the purpose of digging deeply into issues. The gathering is held offsite so that the group can focus and not be distracted by the goings on in an office or by their day-to-day life’’.

Retreats are supposed to help executives get clear on what they are trying to achieve. It provides a documentable platform for developing the process for achieving those objectives. The most essential ingredient for a successful retreat is a clear purpose. This means that the retreat makes it possible to paint a clear picture of the business destination and the path to that destination.  We have seen this play out a number of times in the retreats we have facilitated.

The best retreats we have managed are those that the key stakeholders are fully represented. I recall the one we facilitated for one of the leading book publishers in Nigeria. It was two days set aside for great discussions and listening to each other. The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer were there with other board members and senior management team. It was well attended and productive.

The CPPL management retreat proposition seeks to provide the right atmosphere for quality discussions to hold amongst critical stakeholders of the business, with everyone bringing something unique to the table. In a conducive atmosphere and with proper facilitation, stakeholders candidly review past performance as well as challenges with a view to evolve new and practical strategies to help the business accelerate.

According to Peter Drucker “Culture eats strategy for breakfast’’, so we spend quality time discussing culture and the strategy of the business. I don’t know what your experience has been but in my over 30 years in the corporate world, I strongly believe that good alignment is required for businesses to get the best of their culture and strategies. Organisational alignment requires compatibility between the strategic and cultural paths, and consistency within them. ‘’Strategy is the guiding path, while culture is the driving path’’. It is not about which one is more important but the conscious efforts made for them to work together in proper alignment. This is what we preach.

CUT_3380.JPGAt the end, we are able to craft the strategic direction for the business and tactics that will deliver set goals and objectives. We have done this for Learn Africa Plc, Osato Osawaye & Co, Customer Contact Solutions Nigeria Limited (CCSNL) now Outcess Solutions Nigeria Limited, NIIT Nigeria, Faultless Finish Limited and a couple of others.

The lead facilitator, Ikechukwu Kalu, is a seasoned Value Creation Consultant with over 30 years decent work experience across three major sectors – manufacturing, telecommunication and financial services. He is an adjust faculty member at the Pan Atlantic University and a Resource Person at Lagos Business School. He teaches Brand Strategy & Communication as well as Experiential & Alternative Marketing.

This is the time to have these discussions, to prepare your business for 2020. It promises to be a great year but we must be ready for it. We must be intentional about getting the best out of it. A well facilitated retreat ensures your business is well equipped to deliver a great 2020.  For enquiries please visit us at www.cppl.com.ng or call / WhatsApp on 0701 196 2027.
