THE HEART THAT DRIVES ENTREPRENEURSHIP

THE HEART THAT DRIVES ENTREPRENEURSHIP

When you hear or read the word Entrepreneurship, what is it that occurs to you? I believe your answer would be a function of what you are doing at the moment. For the employed, there is the general impression that entrepreneurship is the emblem of true living. Imagine not having to be responsible to anyone but yourself. You wake up when you want. You do what you want when you want. That is the ultimate work experience. The grass definitely appears greener on the other side. This impression constantly motivates the desire to ultimately leave paid employment.

However, the desire to become entrepreneurs is fired by a lie- that entrepreneurship is the ultimate.  Most of them read books by success stories-Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, our own Aliko Dangote,  and further entrench their beliefs. The statistics are there, but no one really focuses on them, for every Richard, Bill, Steve and Aliko who moved from their garages to High Street, there are several who never got out at all. There are others who managed to get thus far and are barely surviving in the streets.

Do I believe in Entrepreneurship? Absolutely. Do I believe they actually drive economies? Absolutely. However, do I believe everyone should be dreaming of the day they’ll finally leave their paid jobs to jump into the ‘Entrepreneurship Bang Wagon’? Absolutely not. Unfortunately, some may not agree with me but I know that it takes a lot more than a brilliant idea and hard skills to become successful as an entrepreneur, more so in our part of the world where no one really gives you much of a chance. It is not true that they wake up when they like. They often spend sleepless nights. It is not true that they do not report to anybody. They report to their clients and some give them far more crap than any boss would a subordinate. Trust me.

The Bible says that the things that you see are temporal but the things we do not see are eternal. Bringing it home, it means that the entrepreneur’s success is determined by the things happening on the inside, which we do not see, rather than the idea or product he wants to bring into the market place. That explains the brilliant ideas and products that die in the market place. One could argue, the products were not good enough. But what products come into the market completely flawless. I don’t know of any. It is those inner qualities that keep such products in the market despite the flaws. They simply improve with time. The second batch comes out better than the first.

The things that go on inside are vital to success on the outside. The entrepreneur must have a certain frame of mind to succeed. That would be his driving force, that which motivates him and keeps him going.

He must have a resolute sense of purpose. It must be clear in his mind what he is all about and where he is going. When I say what he is all about, I mean he must understand himself to a large extent. What he wants from life and what he does not. What his strengths are and his weaknesses must be familiar to him. He must understand what he can and cannot do. He must be comfortable with himself. He must have a strong sense of self worth and acceptance. He is not the kind of person who defines himself by his experiences. He has the attitude ‘I am who I am, I will not be defined by my failures, weaknesses or my successes’.

An Entrepreneur must have some level of ‘restlessness’. That is what keeps him on his toes. That is what makes him challenge the status quo. That is what makes him uneasy in the face of normal living. That is what drives his creativity. That is what fuels his imagination and he comes up with better structures, better ways, easier methods, more fun applications. He is never satisfied with where things are. Change is a normal part of living for him. While people generally do not like change, the entrepreneur thrives on it.

To the entrepreneur who will succeed, passion is a way of live. He approaches life with passion. Once he believes in something he will go after it with everything he’s got. He will put everything on the line to pursue his dream. He is not half hearted about life. It’s either all or nothing. He would need someone beside him to manage his risk because for him it’s all or nothing. He is a whole hearted risk taker. He has burnt all his bridges.

The successful entrepreneur is usually a very persistent, patient and determined person. He is not easily daunted. He can keep at something for as long as it takes to get what he wants. He takes responsibility and waits through. He does not give up. He believes he cannot fail, so he keeps at it. It is his success mentality that keeps him knocking on those doors, dialling those numbers and sending those emails again and again.

If you look closely at the entrepreneurs who you look up to in our world, these are the qualities that actually brought them success. I am not trying to say they did not have good ideas, they did. However, no matter how good an idea is, it requires tenacity and strength of character to make it succeed in the market place.

When we think entrepreneurship, many of us think success. In our minds we see pictures that connote success-houses, cars, clothes and the finer things of life. But never forget that it’s a process that gets people to the place of comfort.

Having read through, do you think you have what it takes to make that move? Sometimes we feel we do, but we are not yet there. Other times we feel we are not ready, but it’s just fear that is holding us back.  If you are at that place where you are trying to decide, it means you have a choice, take your time. You may need some counseling, please make sure you call me.

However, you may be that person who life has thrown into the streets. Entrepreneurship is your only choice. You must survive. Think, pray, read, develop, and grow up quickly. Then work yourself to the place of strength, so that you can succeed.

Successful entrepreneurship separates the men from the boys. It is one thing to run your business; it is another thing entirely to succeed at it. It is another thing entirely to be the one who dictates how things are done in your industry. There is something about you that makes another person believe enough in what you are offering to put his or her money behind it. It takes guts and guts are on the inside. Build your guts and you cannot fail. CK
