SME GROWTH SEMINAR

Title: SME Growth Seminar

Theme: “Taking your business to the next level”.

What we know about SMEs in Nigeria

The growth of SMEs in Nigeria is unprecedented despite the numerous challenges they face. However, due to lack of adequate infrastructure, financing and knowledge of management principles and best practices, the SME sector has not grown as much as it should. While most of them would think that their greatest problem is that of financing, studies show that finance is actually the least of their problems. They need to understand the fundamentals of business development and apply simple and tested principles to develop and operate profitably.

With the Nigerian economy currently threatened by the events in the oil sector, its ripple effect on foreign exchange earnings as well as the devaluation of the Naira, the SME Sector of the economy is also vulnerable. This sector, which is expected to contribute to the GDP, employment and export generation as well as increase value addition and technological advancement, may not be able to pull its weight under the current circumstances. A recent report from KPMG/EDC-LBS study highlighted Finance/ Capital as being perceived to be risky and one of the biggest problems facing SMEs. It’s about:

• Availability Vs Accessibility
• What is a good / bankable proposal? (Real or Service Sectors)
• Acceptability to Financiers ; 90% Rejection Rate
• Who plays intermediary roles: Savings=Investment
• Providing only what is available to them: Tenor, Pricing etc.
• Appointing a good consultant
• Financial resources will always run after good investments

Funds would always be available when the major constraints are either eliminated or reduced considerably. It’s on the strength of these that Customer Passion Point Limited and Exodus Capital want to organize and facilitate an SME growth seminar. It will be an intensive and practical seminar aimed at equipping SMEs to understand how prepare for, manage growth and be able to successfully approach investors for equity or debt funding
