CPPL In Retrospect, 2017 – Chinwe Kalu

49The year is almost over with just a few days to go. Most organizations have shut down for the year, officially or unofficially. Work is just to maintain for the rest of the year. We are all looking forward to a better 2018.

I believe that 2018 can only be better if we are able to closely assess 2017-the highs, the lows, the wins, the losses. What did we do right? What could we have learnt from the events of the year? Were we able to maximise our opportunities and minimise the threats?

I look back and deep in my heart, I am glad, we are closing in on the year. I need to walk away and keep my gaze ahead, not allowing the challenges of the year colour my vision for 2018.

There were forces way beyond my control. National economic forces which were not favourable at all. There were diminishing budgets which hit our business real hard. But in it all we fought hard, to stay afloat and deliver on our promises to the clients who eventually hired us.

CPPL-Value-Propostion---FacebookWe started off the year on a high note with a number of strategy sessions, helping our clients effectively position themselves for the year. We were optimistic that things would hold up.

Then the Capacity Development arm took off with one of the multinationals engaging us to train their Wholesale Dealers and their staff, to equip them with skills to run their businesses profitably as well as attend to customers more efficiently. That was amazing. We had seven classes running simultaneously with almost 400 people in training over one week. Hectic but extremely rewarding.

Then we had a couple of trainings throughout the year-big and small, all giving us the opportunity to empower our clients’ employees with skills that could generally accelerate these businesses. One that comes to mind is the Workplace Excellence Training we held for a Real Estate Construction firm who build premium homes. It was interesting to empower these people with the excellence mind-set which a lot of Nigerian businesses lack. We brought in Value Creation Concept, Total Quality Management, Project Management, and Personal Effectiveness bringing them all into tandem to ensure that the premium homes are delivered within scope, time and budget. It was our break into the real estate construction industry.

Another program I recall with nostalgia is the Sales Management program for an experiential marketing agency. The big question was how do we manage the salesforce to ensure customers are satisfied and targets are met on a sustainable basis? We developed the program around the selling concept which holds that consumers and businesses, if left alone, will ordinarily not buy enough of the selling company’s products. The organization must, therefore, undertake an aggressive selling and promotional efforts to make more sales.

We talked about a number of concepts-consultative selling as against conventional selling, the art and science of sales management, the transition from selling to account management, managing the sales force, and performance management. It was an enlightening experience working with a very vibrant team of account managers.

By and large we ended the year with a program for one of the telco’s Eastern region Field Sales Force. We brought a mix of value creation, the sales function and what it is all about, consultative selling, the selling cycle, negotiation, account management and personal effectiveness. The response from the participants was very humbling-extremely appreciative of the skills taught.

Our Capacity Development arm was quite occupied through the year even though we have capacity for much more. We even ventured into some new HR related assignments-Competencies Audit as well as Recruitment. The results were amazing with both clients being absolutely delighted.

On the other hand we redefined our Marketing Consulting arm and narrowed down to Trade Marketing Consulting, looking at the following areas:

1.    Brand Engagement Activations

2.    Point of Sale Design / Deployment

3.    Customer Experience Management

4.    Customer & Channel Research

5.    Go-to-Market Strategy & Execution

It was an AHA moment for us as a business as we recognised where the needs we can meet exist and where our actual strengths lie. We developed more confidence to shoot for the skies in the market place because we are sure of excellent delivery.

Were there learnings from 2017? One big one is that excellence is a strong selling point. Making sure we dot our ‘i’s and cross our ‘t’s are crucial to our survival as a business. That is our ace. We should never let that go.

Also, perseverance is key to success. We cannot afford to give up. We must keep pushing for more. During the cause of the year, our patience were tested and in some cases stretched really hard but we held on, focusing on the real issue which is to meet our clients’ needs and aspirations.

Lastly, when things don’t quite go the way we want, we must just keep pushing. We must not engulf ourselves in the problems and challenges because it drains us of the energy we require to continue doing business.

MTM DSA

What am I looking forward to in 2018? My results must exceed those of 2017. Business will be driven by excellence. We must execute to consistently delight our customers-the service, the experience and timeliness.

I am expecting that

·   Our work must speak for us in 2018. Whatever we do must attract more.

·   We are taking new grounds in the Trade Marketing space.

·  We will continue to empower business people to deliver more professionally,                       excellently and consistently.

The CPPL team is all geared up to deliver on our promises and as a result walk into our expectations. It will be another 12 months of hard work, persistence and learning. We are bold to say we are looking forward to a great 2018. Good luck from the entire CPPL team.
